A Lesson from My Uncle
Since I was a teenage girl, I really loved visiting Uncle Dan’s place. What I loved most about his home was the sense of feminine touch, a touch which was foreign in my home. The interior décor and arrangement at my uncle’s place was something to be admired. He and my aunt had a real sense of elegance. All this could be seen as you entered his compound to be met by nicely manicured lawns and beautiful flowers and other decoration. Instead the house was amazingly beautiful; the sitting room, kitchen, washrooms and every other room left a lot to be admired.
What made all this strange was the fact that it was Uncle Jim who did all the décor. His choices of color and furniture were exceptional. I always felt inspired by all that and always complemented him whenever I visited him.
I studied Design in University
At school I was an average student and never got the best pass mark to join the best university as my parent would have loved. I couldn’t even secure good grades for my dream career. But I had other dreams; I wanted to become a designer. Thus after failing to get good grades, uncle Jim was the one I approached and confided to him about my love for design. He decided to consult with my parent about it and within a week, they decided to let me join college and study a diploma in interior design.
I wasn’t good in drawing or painting, but I was choosy about colors and designs and this is what helped me do well in design. I studied hard and ensured that I was well endowed with all the elements of design that were vital in my career.
I helped with the school website
While still in my first year of study, I was able to prove my worth. The college administration wanted the students to come up with ideas for the school website which had to be re-purposed. There were many proposals even from final year students, but to my astonishment, after four weeks of choosing the best design, it was mine which was considered the best.
The school administration was so happy about my design that they decided to help me find a job during the holidays in a local web design company. That was it. It was my road to become a web developer. Although I had no coding experience, my stay with the company was never in vain as they showed me how to set up simple sites using software and then I would give the sites a superb designer.
The staff there was really friendly and didn’t fail to let me understand that there is a big future in the online market and I would make a killing, if I would come up with good designs that please clients. Since I will be graduating soon, I do hope to use all this experience to venture more in web design and development. I think this was my destiny.
